Communications Specialist 

The Communications Specialist is responsible for supporting the development and execution of community relations and public relations programs that deliver against company objectives and strategic initiatives.

The Communications Specialist should be knowledgeable in community programming, event management, media relations, media strategy and social media trends. This person will interact with various levels of media and act as a partner to internal teams including club operations, field team members, membership, brand marketing and merchandising in addition to regular interaction with non-profit organizations.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead development and execution of community relations programming including BJ’s Feeding Communities program, Aisle Help (employee relief fund), grant making, sponsorships, volunteerism, disaster relief and fundraising events
  • Continuously evaluate community relations and CSR initiatives for optimizations and performance
  • Communicate the story of BJ’s community programs and the BJ’s Charitable Foundation to regional and national media outlets
  • Partner with internal communications, social media, investor relations and marketing teams to communicate BJ’s commitment to our communities to internal and external stakeholders
  • Identify and/or evaluate potential community sponsorships and grants
  • Manage the BJ’s Charity Championship, a major fundraising event for the BJ’s Charitable Foundation. This includes fundraising and sponsorship management, management of all logistics, onsite event management and support, acting as the liaison between BJ’s and tournament agency, creation of promotional materials, communications development to key stakeholders and a key partner to the merchandising teams to ensure fundraising goals are met
  • Evaluate and oversee relationships with community vendors and software systems
  • Support public relations programming including building media lists, media monitoring, shipping samples, supporting influencer programs, fielding media calls and more
  • Develop press materials including press releases, media alerts, pitches, key messages and more
  • Support Communications Managers in club opening programs including identifying sponsorship and grant opportunities, local media outreach, event logistics, onsite event management and more
  • Support overall Corporate Communications team and objectives in various areas including public relations, social media, community relations and internal communications

Requirements:

  • 3 – 6 years of experience in community relations, communications, marketing or a related field
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail, flexible with change, strong collaborative skills, team player

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Highly organized, fast and accurate, results-oriented and able to work well under pressure and within strict deadlines and budgets
  • Experience in message development and communications planning
  • Experience in media relations and securing coverage on both a local and national level
  • Superb project management skills
  • Strong executive presence and the ability to communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization

Additional Requirements:

  • Available to travel to BJ’s Wholesale Club locations on occasion (25%)
  • Event support requiring long periods of standing, some lifting
