Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Treasurer, the Director of Insurance and Risk Management will lead the Risk Management Department.  Responsibilities include effectively managing both the inhouse team and third party claims administrator to achieve optimal financial results; liaising with all external stakeholders including insurance brokers, insurance carriers, outside counsel, auditors, regulators and actuaries; accurately setting and monitoring the insurance and risk management budget and loss development triangles; partnering with internal stakeholders to achieve risk management objectives; and proactively monitoring best practices and new risk management tools. Peer networking, professional development and participation in RIMS is encouraged.    


Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities


  • Strategic management of all insurance policy renewals, including timely compilation of all underwriting information, as well as analysis of the most advantageous coverage terms and conditions at the appropriate limits of liability and deductible levels.
  • Management of self-insured Worker’s Compensation and General Liability programs. Provide strategic guidance and oversee the third-party claims administrator as well as the inhouse team of eight professionals responsible for claims administration, litigation management and financial analysis.
  • Analysis of detailed loss information (including third party actuarial analyses) to proactively identify trends and optimize claim management.
  • Development  of key safety measures and claims performance metrics to drive reductions in claim frequency and severity, in partnership with the Safety / Asset Protection teams.
  • Reporting, handling and resolving of Property, Environmental, and Executive Risk insurance claims
  • Loss forecasting and developing in conjunction with monitoring annual insurance budget.  Quarterly reserve analysis, review of expense variances, and reporting to senior management recommended adjustments.
  • Presentation of significant claims and developments to executive leadership twice annually for both Worker’s Compensation and GL programs.




  • Minimum 15+ years combined experience including management of a corporate risk department and/or large insurance broker with retail claims experience.  Strong foundation in underwriting, claims adjustment, litigation management and risk control as well as accounting, finance, and legal issues. 
  • Retail industry experience in a large, multistate company is strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Insurance, Risk Management or equivalent. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Associates in Risk Management (ARM) and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or other industry certifications preferred.
  • Knowledge of database analytics, finance and accounting, including loss triangle analyses and claims trends, methods for allocating risk management costs and setting of reserves for self-insured claims.
  • Excellent communicator, strategic thinker, mentor and cross-functional collaborative team player.
