DIRECTOR OF OPTICAL

The Category Director reports into the Vice President of Merchandise Management and oversees all sales and marketing efforts and programs for BJ’s Optical.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities

  • Play the lead role in the design and development of optical sales/marketing/merchandising programs and solutions, linked to Optical business goals and strategic priorities.
  • Responsible for managing the Optical home office team on a day-to-day basis, including performance reviews, coaching and development of Optical team members.
  • Partner and collaborate with both internal resources (operations, finance, etc.), and external partners (managed care programs, frame and lab vendors, etc.).
  • Understand and support inter-team dependencies by utilizing experience in complex Optical retail landscape.
  • Support the development of Independent Optometrist leaseholders in BJ’s Optical locations.
  • Build and execute strategic planning for growth of Optical sales, gross margin, and member satisfaction.
  • Responsible for planning, building, executing and measuring Optical promotions and marketing programs.
  • Build and monitor Optical key performance indicators and Optical training to drive growth and operational excellence.
  • Leverage prior optical experience to identify and execute process improvements and business growth opportunities.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. MBA or Doctor of Optometry preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in Optical retail management (ideally home office or similar) or Optometry practice management.
  • Experienced facilitator across all levels of an organization.
  • Strong knowledge of optical industry landscape, including: managed care, frame and lab vendors, contact lenses, and Optometry practice process excellence.
  • Experience directly managing and developing team members.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and projects from inception through evaluation with high levels of quality.
  • Detail oriented with excellent follow-through and problem solving skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt, drive and leverage change.
  • Proficient with SAP, MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. 

Environmental Job Conditions

  • Office based setting
  • Ability to travel up to 20% within the BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc. footprint
  • Experience in a retail setting a plus
