The Membership Analytics Team is BJ’s internal advanced analytics consultancy. The Team is responsible for a wide range of analysis in support of BJ’s efforts to strengthen member loyalty, improve retention, acquire high quality members and increase member lifetime value.  The Lead Membership Analyst, Business Analytics will be responsible for transforming BJ’s wealth of POS, membership and demographic data into actionable business insights.


Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities:


  • Transform BJ’s wealth of POS, membership and demographic data into actionable business insights; communicate findings in a thoughtful and concise manner
  • Provide quantitative insight to help create segment specific strategies to help drive sales, lifetime value and renewal
  • Work in conjunction with marketing and merchant teams on promotional strategies and targeting
  • Size proposed engagement/promotional strategies and assess economic viability through ROI modeling
  • Provide both post-mortem analytics as well as recommendations for go-forward strategies
  • Responsible for ad-hoc member level analytics in support of divisions outside of Membership, including Marketing, Merchandising, Finance and Operations
  • Mine and summarize large datasets using SAS and SQL
  • Serve as thought leader in the design and development of new tools and reporting
  • The role is highly analytical in nature and requires the ability to mine and interpret data as well as translate complex concepts for non-technical team members and senior executives
  • Devise creative technical solutions to automate routine, structured tasks
  • Additional tasks/responsibilities will be assigned as needed




  • Proficient with SQL (5+ years); knowledge of SAS a plus
  • MS Excel & Access power user
  • 5+ years of data mining or analytics experience, preferably in a retail setting
  • Ability to “think outside the box” in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • VB and VBA experience
  • Tableau a plus
  • SAP WEBI and Analysis experience a plus
  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics or Analytics related field
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
