Merchandise Planning Analyst

Planning Analysts are primarily responsible for planning and forecasting for future merchandise buys based on historical and forecasted sales, promotional and seasonal activity, reoccurring buys and current inventory levels. They are responsible for analyzing stock to sales ratios, responding to changing sales trends, and ensuring forecasted sales are optimal so that inventory targets are achieved for assigned categories. The Planning Analyst will partner with Executives, Merchandise Budget team, Category Merchants, Allocation Analysts and Vendors to maximize sales return on inventory investment to increase profitability by managing the flow of goods.

  • Download, analyze and recap actual sales data against plan, previous year, and budget, as well as, promotional results vs. initial forecast. Summarized findings to be shared with all appropriate stakeholders with strategies to maintain appropriate inventory levels and prevent out of stocks.
  • Partner with Executives, Category Merchants, Allocation Analysts and Vendors to execute key business decisions such as: promotional buy opportunities, markdowns, assortment plans, exit strategies, ad-hoc analysis where applicable
  • Build financial sales, gross margin and inventory plans at a weekly level which ties to the companies’ sales, margin and turnover goals. Monitor performance in season during Launch, Promotional, Peak and Markdown periods
  • Create and maintain key article ladder plans both pre-season and in-season including managing receipt flow
  • Create, manage and present Open-to-Buy (OTB) analysis to Senior Management and Merchants at Monthly Business Review meetings along with recommended strategies to ensure sales and inventory plans are achieved. 


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2+ years relevant inventory management or merchandise planning experience
  • Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively share ideas and directions that lead others to action
  • Effective in a variety of presentation settings including one-on-one, small and large groups, and with peers and bosses
  • Need to be strong and calm under pressure. This role can require quick thinking to spot trends, evaluate large amounts of data and make sound decisions. Things can change very quickly and there are always deadlines to meet.
