VP, CATEGORY PROFIT IMPROVEMENT

The VP, Category Profit Improvement will leverage current and future business requirements, market intelligence, and historical spend information to develop innovative category strategies that drive cost reduction, a simplified supply base, and enable business value. Assists in implementation of category strategies to properly account for demand management and identified savings initiatives. Works with the merchandising leadership team, including the EVP, Chief Commercial Officer; SVP, General Merchandise Managers and DMM’s to establish category metrics and savings targets, monitor performance, and communicate these to stakeholders and the creation of a category specific initiative pipeline that will forecast and direct procurement projects and sourcing activities. Responsible for continuously driving profit improvements across categories and charged with providing fact-based and data-driven guidance to Divisional Merchandise leaders in selecting vendors, brands, and SKUs that result in increased sales and profit.

This role is a high visibility role within the organization with direct influence and exposure to senior Merchandising leadership through bi-monthly executive reviews with BJ’s Chief Growth Officer, CFO, and CEO. The role reports directly into the SVP Strategic Planning & Investor Relations within the Finance organization.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a high-performing CPI team consisting of approximately 10 analysts
  • Lead the CPI team to identify sales, cost, and profit opportunities across SKUs and vendors through rigorous analysis and research, including: competitive benchmarking (space, brands, SKUs), market insights, customer insights (eg, surveys, loyalty analysis), vendor insight (cost structures, motivations), and extensive SKU/brand/vendor-level analysis (relative productivity, profitability, brand loyalty, SKU transferability, etc.).
  • Oversee the development of "Ask" materials to be shared with vendors during negotiations.
  • Provide direct vendor negotiations support to Merchants, including serving as lead negotiator where warranted.
  • Manage processes to ensure that Company is not receiving cost increases that are unjustified (eg, relative to commodity price movements), and that Company receives cost decreases commensurate with commodity price drops.
  • Collaborate and team with BJ’s internal procurement team to ensure private label sourcing opportunities are identified and effectively executed.
  • Develop annual targets and the ongoing tracking of savings related to CPI.
  • Work on special projects, ad hoc analysis, and initiatives related to assortment performance, cost reduction and category profitability. 

Requirements

  • MBA or master’s degree Finance and/or other quantitative analytical degree.
  • 12-15 years experience in leadership roles in a company of substantial size and complexity or equivalent consulting experience
  • Merchandising experience within the retail industry
  • Track record of leading large, complex, category management activities at enterprise level, including multi-geographic programs. Ability and experience providing thought leadership and consultative guidance to the top executives in Category Management leading practices
  • Innovative Thinking: Proven ability to connect ideas, events, and circumstances to find category management solutions to business problems or goals.
  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and succinctly, both verbally and in writing via Microsoft PowerPoint.
